1000 Books before Kindergarten

1000 Books before Kindergarten encourages parents or caregivers to help children build a love of reading. The concept is simple: Read a book -- any book, even the same book multiple times -- to your newborn, infant, or toddler. The goal of the program is to read 1,000 books before the child enters kindergarten.

Sound too ambitious? It’s not! If you read one book each night, you and your child will have read about 365 books in a year. That’s 730 books in two years, and 1,095 books in three years.

Reading together not only gives you quality time with your child, it also helps them strengthen language skills and vocabulary, and instills a love of reading and learning that can be building blocks to academic success when they enter school.

In the 1000 Books before Kindergarten program, as your child reaches designated benchmarks in terms of the number of books read, they earn rewards.
