The Potomac Public Library Scholarship in memory of David Gentry
The David Gentry Memorial Scholarship was recently renamed the Potomac Public LIbrary Scholarship in memory of David Gentry to clarify that it is a program offered and funded by the library, with the help of donors and participants at the summertime cake walks.
Established by the library in 2020, the scholarship is in memory community member the late David Gentry, who,
upon graduating from Armstrong-Potomac High School, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Gentry served fourteen years in the Marine Corps, completing several tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Japan. Eventually achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant, he also was the recipient of numerous medals, including a Purple Heart.
SSgt. Gentry died Nov. 18, 2017, at his home in Oklahoma from chemical poisoning he received in the line of duty while stationed in the Mideast.
Each spring, the library board awards a small scholarship in his honor to a senior (or seniors, depending on the availability of funds) graduating from Armstrong-Potomac High School to help defray the expenses of college, community college or trade school.
